JOB DETAILS:
Overview:
The area manager is responsible for overseeing and managing conservation initiatives across the kasonso busanga game management area (gma) and adjacent community conservation areas. This role involves coordinating and facilitating resource protection and protected area management activities, collaborating with stakeholders, engaging with the local communities and traditional leaders, and ensuring compliance within the larger partnership agreements. The area manager plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable practices, protecting biodiversity and managing natural resources effectively , and ensuring community participation in and benefit from conservation. This position is the musekese conservation point of contact for that region.
Responsibilities:
strategic planning:
- support the development of strategic conservation plans for the assigned area and their implementation with the other stakeholders in the landscape based on regular regular needs assessments.
- identify key resource protection priorities, goals, and objectives.
- collaborate with senior management to align conservation strategies with organizational objectives.
Program management:
- plan, organize, and execute conservation programs and projects.
- coordinate deployment of resource protection teams and monitor the performance of the teams
- monitor and evaluate the progress of ongoing initiatives and relationships.
- ensure that programs are aligned with legal requirements and donor commitments.
Stakeholder engagement:
- build and maintain relationships with government agencies, non-profit organizations, community groups,traditional leaders, hunting outfitters and other stakeholders.
- collaborate with local communities to involve and align them in conservation efforts.
- communicate effectively to raise awareness and garner support for conservation initiatives.
budget management:
- develop and manage budgets for delivering the goal conservation objectives for that region.
- ensure efficient use of resources and adherence to financial guidelines and reporting to the organisation
- finance team.
Reporting and documentation:
- prepare regular reports on the progress of conservation programs.
- maintain accurate records of data, reports, and other documentation.
compliance and regulatory affairs:
- ensure compliance with local, national, and international environmental regulations.
- work with legal experts to address any compliance issues.
Qualifications & experience:
- bachelor’s or advanced degree in environmental science, conservation biology, natural resource management, a related field or more than 10 years of experience related to the requirements below
- proven experience in conservation management, with a track record of successful project implementation.
- experience working in communities and with traditional leaders.
- experience and knowledge of fire management
- experience and knowledge of protection activities (logistics and coordination of wildlife, fisheries or forestry patrols)
- the ability to work independently or as part of a broader team in often remote and challenging environments for long periods of time.
- strong leadership and team management skills.
- excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- knowledge of zambian environmental regulations and policies through the various natural resource management acts.
- ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- analytical and problem-solving skills.
- budget management experience.
- valid drivers license
- zambian citizen or resident
- the area manager plays a vital role in promoting sustainability, preserving ecosystems, and contributing to the overall wellbeing of the environment and the local communities that depend on it.
Remuneration: negotiable on experience.
