Reporting to the General Manager, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and promoting compliance to the LMC Occupational Health & Safety Policy to leave a sustainable legacy of a healthy safe work culture.

Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Liaise with the management team and ensure strict adherence to Health and Safety standards with zero tolerance to non-compliance to standards.
  • Ensure that the Health and Safety Management System is implemented, maintained and continually improved as per the ISO 45001 2018 Standard.
  • Implement the Journey to Zero programme and develop a positive safety culture among the workforce to reduce injury and loss.
  • Coordinate the operation’s Health and Safety programmes and align with local, regional and national programmes and legislation where applicable.
  • Maintain and improve the Industrial Hygiene Programme.
  • Deliver cost effective and quality health care services.
  • Ensure that Occupational Health and Safety complies with all applicable legislation and regulations.
  • Ensure timely close out of all identified non-conformances along with compliance to regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain the emergency preparedness plan and liaise with the operational departments to ensure emergency drill training is completed.
  • Ensure compliance to Safety Leading Indicators completion.
  • Deliver compliance to H&S Equipment Maintenance Schedules along with the monthly plan.
  • Advise and take part in the development of standardised technical training packages, assessment tools and forms for internal training.
  • Costing of planned training and keeping within budgets and assessing the return on investment of any training and development programmes.
  • Ensure that statutory training requirements are met.
  • Complete competency mapping and profiling for all mining roles.
  • Induction training to be completed for all new employees, visitors and contractors on arrival on site.
  • Lead and effectively manage the Health and Safety department and ensure all staff are fully trained and developed to deliver a service that is fit for purpose.
  • Facilitate the maintenance and management of Occupational Health and Safety through systems, audit / inspection and the establishment of high standards and expectations on employees of safety aware behaviours / performance.
  • Attend the Health and Safety Representatives meetings to provide competent advice and manage the administration of the meeting.
  • Ensure appropriate incident investigation methodology is provided to ensure personal accountability and improve risk management, including monitoring and interpretation of statistical data.
  • Ensure all employees attend regulatory training within a 12-month cycle, including induction or regulatory refresher training.
  • Implement and manage the Alcohol and Drug Standard.
  • Implement in conjunction with Human Resources, the Dover Test for employees and prospective employees.
  • Work in compliance with ISO 14001 and 45001 Standards.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Degree in Occupational Health & Safety/Risk Management/Engineering field.
  • Minimum of 5 – 8 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Minimum 2 – 3 years’ experience in mining/ engineering operational role.
  • Open pit mining operations experience.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills.
  • Ability to conduct analysis and write detailed reports.
  • Computer literate, MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook.
